Reflection
“Be doers of the Word and not hearers only.”  These words we hear in the second reading today are a basic foundation to our baptismal call to authentic Christian living.  It is easy for us to hear the Word of God and tell others what is right and what is wrong.  It is much more challenging for us to not only hear the Word, but to integrate it into our lives and show others what is right and what is wrong by our lived example of being a “doer of the Word” that comes from our hearts.  The Pharisees and Scribes in the Gospel are concerned that the disciples are not following tradition.  Jesus responds by pointing out that it is easy to speak about and focus on the external human traditions rather than on the commandment of God that is lived from the heart.  How are we “doers of the Word” in our daily living of the Gospel?  We are reminded in our Rule and Life of the Brothers and Sisters of the Third Order Regular of St. Francis, “As they announce peace with their lips, let them be careful to have it even more within their own hearts.”  Let us be “doers of the Word and not hearers only.”

Prayer
God of Peace and Justice, we pray that we may be living witnesses to your Word in all that we do.  May our daily actions give witness to the Gospel and bring those we encounter closer to you.
