Reflection for Epiphany, by S. Ruthann Boyle, OSF

epiphany1Reflection for January 6, 2013

First Reading: Isaiah 60:1-6
Second Reading: Eph. 3:2-6
Gospel: Matthew 2:1-2

Today is the traditional date for Epiphany, a feast that celebrates the visit of the Magi from the East. Drawn by a bright star, the kings followed the star until it came to a standstill over Bethlehem. They were overjoyed at seeing the star and upon entering the house they found the Christ Child with his mother, Mary. They recognized the promised Messiah and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.

God, too, presents us with GIFTS of LOVE. It is a gift that can be opened at any time, in the reality of our daily lives, as in the births and deaths, the struggles and fears, the laughter and joys, the hopes and dreams of every human person. We need to recognize God living within us and within every person near and far. You will be overjoyed as you enter within their house (their inner selves) and recognize the presence of Emmanuel, God with us.

As we celebrate the feast of Epiphany today, help us to be grateful and take great delight in the gift of God’s love to us. May we be aware of new and exciting ways to share our gift of LOVE with others. Amen.
