Reflection for the Baptism of Jesus, by S. Helen Echstein, OSF

baptismJesusFirst Reading: Isaiah 42:1-4, 6-7
Second Reading: Acts of the Apostles 10:34-38
Gospel: Matthew 3:13-17

John said, “I need to be baptized by you, and yet you are coming to me?” Jesus said, “Allow it now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Both John and Jesus recognized a need for a relationship with God. John knew and believed in Jesus. Jesus knew his relationship in God and wanted to fulfill the promises that were to be completed through him.

We, too, are chosen and the beloved of God. We are called to be the light in the darkness through service, justly treating others with respect and love. Can the Spirit of God really say to me, “This is my beloved, with whom I am well pleased?”

Spirit of God be upon me to know and desire a true relationship with Jesus. Through my belief help me to respond to God’s love by joining Jesus in his ministry, proclaiming the compassionate and forgiving God, our Creator. I do need a savior. Come, Lord Jesus, come!
